We have announced our initial slate of services and they can be seen (and signed up for) here:
Pacifica Net Services
As is mentioned on that page, the main thing we want to stress is that you can feel comfortable trying our service risk free.
If you get a receiving device and enjoy the service from the start as the majority of our beta testers did, that’s wonderful.
If you happen to be in an area where we still may need a few antennas to increase coverage, just let us know and we’ll try to get it fixed. While we’re fixing it, you won’t be charged. We also have a trial period, where you can return your equipment for a full refund. We only ask that you let us know if the service does not meet your needs so we can try and fix it before you return it.
We don’t take anybody’s business for granted and will work as hard as we can to provide a useful service at an affordable price.
Also, we’ve recently started our deployment in the Back of the Valley and will have more updates soon. We hope to start selling services there in early June.
If you are interested in a promotional deal to start the service, email and mention you read this on the blog and I’ll set you up.

One of the great things about a citywide Wi-Fi network is that you can “take your login out for a walk”. I’d like to conduct a quick survey to see some responses about where people would like to take their laptops and get web service (coffee shops, parks, beaches, etc.). I want to make sure we have great service those places, so let me know if you have a place in mind. Thanks.

We have now installed roughly 130 Access Points (AP) in Fairmont, Westview (Pacific Highlands), Pacific Manor, Edgemar, Sharp Park, Fairway Park, parts of Vallemar and Rockaway Beach, Pedro Point and parts of Linda Mar. We still have most of the Southeastern part of the city to do but we should start on that in the coming weeks.
Please see these maps for approximate locations of the APs:
North
Central
South
Service should be available in parts of Vallemar and Rockaway Beach starting later next week with Fairway Park coming online shortly after that.
As always, all comments and questions are appreciated.

I have been receiving a lot of great questions from people via email and it occurred to me that many more people may have the same question or questions and that the answers may be helpful to everybody.
So I have decided to put up this entry and let people use the comments area to ask any questions they have about the Pacifica Net Citywide Wi-Fi network.
Fire away!

Just a quick update…
We are currently finishing up a few tests in our initial coverage area and we’ve been very pleased with the way the early version of the Pacifica Net service has performed. The vast majority of our beta testers have been able to receive true broadband speeds inside their homes, with over half getting multiple Mbps-type speeds both uploading and downloading.
The plan for now is to finish up a few more tests in this first coverage area and then begin selling services in that area and shortly after that, begin installing additional APs (the antennas that sit on the street lights and broadcast the signal) as the roll out across Pacifica begins in earnest. We’re looking forward to making our service available to the rest of Pacifica and the installation process should begin in the next 30- 45 days.
As always, feel free to comment or ask any questions.
Thanks.

Just a quick head’s up about the latest news.
The beta test continues on this week and will probably wrap up in the next 10-14 days, if not sooner. At that point we will start selling service to residential and small businesses customers.
The results have been very good with more than half of the testers seeing download speeds between 2 and 5 Mbps.
The other great thing is the UPLOAD speeds they are seeing. Many of these testers are seeing upload speeds between 1 Mbps and 3 Mbps. That is obviously a great deal faster than either DSL or Cable.
We’ve also heard about some of our beta testers taking their laptops and working in other parts of the initial coverage area. One tester even took her CPE and headed over to Starbucks where she said the speeds blew away the T Mobile Hot Spot service. The mobility our service will offer should be a great help to those who call on clients in the area or just enjoy working in the park or coffee shop from time to time.
More news soon and please keep the comments and questions coming.

We delivered the first CPE to customers this weekend and today. CPE stands for Customer Premises Equipment and in this case is a sort of “Wi-Fi modem” that will strengthen the connection between your computer and the Pacifica Net network. You can check out this device here: Ruckus MetroFlex.
Some houses won’t require CPE but some will. Odds are, if you want better speed, you will want CPE.
I will be delivering more CPE over the next few days as the beta test gets rolling full speed. The length of the beta test is TBD but we’re going to try to open up phase 1 for residential use as fast as possible to everyone.
More news soon.

This past week we installed the remainder of the radios that will provide coverage for the first phase of our Pacifica Net network bringing the total to 30. We’re getting close to serving wireless broadband access in parts of the Pedro Point and Linda Mar areas. To see a map of the approximate locations of these access points, go here.
We have a few tweaks left and a bit of internal testing but we should be able to provide access in the next couple of weeks.
More news soon.
